One workspace, several ways to write

From the first beat to the final page

Draft in screenplay format, map the story, then move between your outline and scenes without losing their relationship.

Screenplay editor

Stay with the story while the editor handles screenplay structure and gives you control when you need it.

  • Scene headings, action, character cues, dialogue, parentheticals, transitions, shots, subheadings, and lyrics
  • Page view, zoom, line movement, Undo and Redo
  • Find and Replace, selection formatting, and screenplay-focused layout controls

Story Builder (Beats)

Develop the dramatic outline alongside the screenplay. Connect a Beat to a scene, split a long Beat, and keep your outline ordered as the draft changes.

  • Move Beats and scenes in screenplay order
  • See disconnected Beats or all Beats
  • Track connected scenes and jump to screenplay locations

Card Board

See scenes and unconnected Beats as movable cards. Reordering on the board updates the screenplay and Story Builder together.

  • Drag cards or use Move up and Move down
  • Filter to disconnected cards
  • Undo or Redo a board move

Focus on a character or place

Reduce the visible draft to the parts you want to examine. Follow one character through their scenes or review everything happening at a location.

  • Focus view helps you inspect a selected thread
  • Return to the complete screenplay at any time

Review and revise

Keep track of changes and explore writing alternatives without losing your working draft.

  • Revision History and named checkpoints
  • Compare revisions, comments, and bookmarks
  • Alternate dialogue and dialogue reports

Tools for everyday writing

Keep practical writing helpers close to the screenplay instead of scattering your process across separate tools.

  • Character profiles and scene navigator
  • Spelling dictionary and formatting checks
  • Writing goals, session tracking, notes, and continuity tools

Follow the thread

Find the scenes that matter right now

When you’re revising a character arc or checking a location, Focus can narrow the screenplay to the scenes that match. Use it to inspect a throughline, then switch back to the full draft.

  • Focus on a character and see their scenes
  • Focus on a location or scene heading
  • Use Story Builder and Card Board to move through story structure
  • Keep the connected Beat and scene in sync as the screenplay is rearranged

A connected workflow

Build the outline, arrange the scenes, keep writing

Beats and scenes share one order across the editor, Story Builder, and Card Board.

Write a Beat

Describe a story moment in Story Builder, even before it has a scene.

Connect or create a scene

Attach the Beat to an existing scene or start a new connected scene.

Reorder the story

Move the Beat or scene in Story Builder or Card Board; the Editor follows immediately.

Revise in context

Open the screenplay at the relevant scene and continue shaping the draft.

Questions writers ask

Frequently asked questions

Is The Script Skillet really free?

Yes. It is a personal, not-for-profit project and is intended to remain free to use. There are no ads and no account sign-up.

Do I need to install anything?

No. The Script Skillet runs in a web browser. You can optionally add it to a device’s home screen when your browser supports web-app installation; this does not guarantee offline access.

Can I use it on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The editor and its writing tools are built for browser use on mobile, tablet, and desktop screens. The exact file-picker options depend on your browser and device.

Does the app upload or sync my screenplay online?

The app does not upload screenplay text or passwords to its own server, and it does not provide cloud syncing. Your browser stores a working copy on that device. Save the screenplay file to a location you choose and keep your own backup.

Can I password-protect my screenplay?

Yes. Password protection is optional for Script Skillet screenplay files. Keep the password somewhere safe; it cannot be recovered if you forget it.

What can I export?

Export options include PDF, Final Draft FDX, Fountain, plain text, and a Script Skillet .script file. A portable encrypted export can include a screenplay’s cover images.

What are Story Builder and Card Board?

Story Builder lets you write Beats and connect them to screenplay scenes. Card Board gives you a visual way to reorder scenes and unconnected Beats. Their order stays aligned with the Editor.

Can I focus on one character or location?

Yes. Focus filters the visible screenplay to scenes associated with a selected character or location, so you can inspect one thread and return to the complete script afterward.

Can I move my screenplay to another writing program?

Export to Final Draft FDX, Fountain, PDF, or plain text depending on what you need. Compatibility and formatting details can vary between applications, so review the exported file after opening it elsewhere.
